Your new pet and your Sacramento home insurance

8/24/2011 4:10:00 PM
If you’re thinking about getting a pet, have you considered how this addition to your family might affect your Sacramento home insurance coverage? Many homeowners insurance policies provide a degree of coverage for third party liability, so if your puppy bites the mailman or digs up your neighbor’s garden, you may already be covered for the cost of claims up to the limit set in the policy. However, it’s important to double check these facts if you are unsure of the details in your insurance policy.

Until a few years ago, pet liability was included automatically in home insurance coverage, but these days pet liability is considered to be a high risk factor by insurers and automatic coverage is not so common. Insurance companies vary in the way they deal with pet ownership liability; some companies provide liability coverage through add-ons to home insurance policies, some restrict liability coverage to certain dog breeds and others deal with pet liability on a case-by-case basis. It’s not easy to insure for liability if you own certain types of dogs, and some breeds are specifically excluded from coverage. However, in many U.S. states, the pet owner can be held legally responsible for death or injury caused by a dog-related accident or attack, so in those areas liability insurance is essential.

Pet liability insurance is a complicated issue, but it’s often not a huge problem obtaining liability coverage under a Sacramento insurance policy - unless you choose a dog that is known to be aggressive, or one that is specifically excluded.
