What can your Sacramento home insurance policy cover?

9/21/2011 4:30:00 PM
Your Sacramento home insurance policy can cover much more than a building: in addition to the home itself, it can cover your personal belongings, liability, and loss of use. Different types of homeowners policies offer varying levels of protection. The details below relate to what is covered by the most commonly purchased policy, known as HO-3.

The home and contents portion of your home insurance covers your home, other buildings on the property such as garages and sheds, as well as your furniture and other personal property. You are protected against loss resulting from an insured disaster (these may include fire, wind storm, explosion, lightning strike, theft or vandalism – but always check the inclusions and exclusions on your policy).

Damage caused by everyday wear and tear, or by an earthquake or flood, is not covered by standard home insurance policies. If you live in a region with particular climatic conditions you may find that there are coverage restrictions. For example, if your home is located near the Atlantic or Gulf coasts there may be restrictions on wind damage coverage.

The liability protection in home insurance is designed to cover legal costs incurred if someone files a lawsuit claiming to have suffered injury or property damage caused by you or a member of your family. Loss of use protection is designed to cover you for additional living expenses if an insured disaster forces you to move out of your home while it is being repaired or rebuilt.
